Volunteer: Mentor-Tutor for Middle Schoolers (in Raleigh, NC)

Grow Your World is seeking volunteers to provide mentorship and tutoring in school at River Oaks and Connections Academy in Raleigh, NC. Volunteers will be placed with an individual or a group of students focused on a specific need (specific subject matter TBD by your capacity and existing needs) and will serve under the direction of a teacher. Mentor-tutoring slots are available Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and volunteers can sign up for one or multiple weekly slots. An orientation and ongoing support will be provided. Volunteers who are interested in deepening their impact may have opportunities to mentor individual students and/or extend their volunteership through our other programs (e.g. after school, mentorship in other districts)
Skills/Qualities: Love of middle school:  We are especially looking for volunteers who truly enjoy middle schoolers and delight in seeing them grow. Behavior support: Youth will likely be those who do not love school. Comfort meeting children where they are to support their behavioral and emotional needs is paramount. Relationship skills: Learning is most powerful when there is a connection. We'd love to have volunteers who will take the time to get to know our students.Communication skills: We need volunteers who can explain concepts and skills clearly and who can listen deeply to understand where a student needs support. Several of our students are multilingual learners (MLLs), and so being able to adjust your vocabulary to better meet students' needs is especially helpful.Dependability: We expect volunteers to arrive on time each week. Our students and teachers are counting on you!

Location: Must work from a location where you can reliably connect to Zoom and engage with students with your camera on.

Job Description:

Mentor-Tutors provide one-on-one mentoring and academic support via Zoom. Will typically work with the same student at the same hour each week, though mentor-tutors should remain flexible to be able to mentor-tutor other students in relevant subject areas as needed. Mentor-Tutors and Students are paired based on identities, interests and subject matter needs. Our goal is that the mentor-tutor relationship is reciprocally fruitful and fun.Mentor-Tutors will be able to specify subjects and grade levels of interest, as well as availability in their applications. Mentor-Tutors are required to be present each week and can provide notice 1 week in advance of sessions missed (e.g. tests, studying, work) and within 24 hours for emergencies (severe illness or death of a family member). Mentor-Tutors should plan to miss no more than 3 sessions per semester. One unexcused absence (no notice or late notice) will lead to being put on a notice of potential disciplinary action. A second unexcused absence will lead to dismissal from the position
