Service Opportunities From: North Carolina Central University

In the spirit of the 2025 Ultimate Homecoming Experience, the Office of Community Engagement and Service at NCCU, along with Durham Public Schools, seeks your support in reading to children in grades K-3 in "Eagle Village Schools" surrounding the University.

Gather at the NCCU Student Center Lobby at 8:30am to get your school assignment and transportation to the school, if needed.  You will sign in as a visitor at the elementary school and get assigned to a classroom to read to your students from 9:00am to 11:15am. You will have transportation from the school to the NCCU Student Center.

Participants will earn 8 hours of service credit for their involvement in The Power of Reading: "Reading Is My Super Power" service opportunity as part of the 2025 Ultimate Homecoming Experience.

Volunteers are needed to serve as hosts and hostesses for Conversation on Character Panel Discussion on Thursday, October 30, 2025  at H.M. Michaux School of Education Auditorium, 4:00 p.m.  arrival.  The program begins at 5:30pm.

Join Welcome Baby and share gifts of warmth with Durham families. Welcome Baby is seeking a regular volunteer to assist with our Winter Coat Distribution. Volunteers will assist in pulling coats of appropriate size, gender and restocking as needed.

Every Friday from 9am-1pm (can be somewhat flexible on times) The opportunity will run through the end of February (depending on Punxsutawney Phil).

If you are available most Friday’s please consider joining the Welcome Baby team, your time will help keep Giving Closet process run smoothly and efficiently and impact Durham families this winter.

Family Friendly Event: Ballot Corrections

Did you know that Durham students (K–12) get to vote on the same ballots as adults? They do!

To make sure every student vote counts, we review the ballots—erasing comments, pictures, and names, and checking that the bubbles are filled in correctly.

This is a drop-in, family-friendly volunteer event. Stay as long as you’d like and help us make sure student voices are counted! Please give us an idea of when to expect you.

Exploration Day – Volunteers can sign up for the morning, afternoon, or the full day.

About the Event: Exploration Day is a high-energy experience where students explore different clubs and interests. Volunteers will help lead clubs, facilitate activities, and engage with students throughout the day. All materials and instructions will be provided—just bring your energy and enthusiasm!

Help our friends at FSE get in the spooky spirit by painting pumpkins together!

Join staff and volunteers from the Durham Community Land Trustees for a creek cleanup in Historic Hayti! This cleanup is a part of an ongoing community creek restoration project in Hayti.

Volunteers will meet at 800 Simmons Street and continue to the creek from there. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Please wear closed-toed shoes or boots and clothes that can get dirty. We are looking for volunteers to help us prepare for our biggest event of the year! On Tuesdays, from 5:00 to 8:00pm, come to Liberty Arts to participate in Iron Breaking.

Liberty Arts' 9th Annual Iron Pour is coming up on November 15th, 2025. In order to run an Iron Pour, our organization needs dozens of buckets of chip-sized pieces of iron. We receive larger pieces of iron through donations (radiators, bathtubs, etc) and these need to be broken down into small pieces. These small pieces of iron will be melted to create metal sculptures during our 9th Annual Iron Pour.

This volunteer opportunity is a physical activity. You'll be smashing metal scrap using hammers! We provide safety gear (glasses, face shields, and shoe coverings), but ask that you wear thicker clothing like denim, and closed-toe shoes/boots. 

This opportunity is a great stress reliever. Take out some of your frustrations and support the arts all at once! 

We will be hosting a Career Fair for our kindergarten through 5th graders and their families.  We will need help with setting up, showing our students and their families where things are, then breaking down and cleaning up.

We need volunteers to help serve food, help guide guests to their seats, help set up, help breakdown and clean up at the end, and other duties/tasks as assigned.

Volunteers are needed to assist with packing bags of groceries before food is distributed to students.

SDS needs people to organize clothes for our event The Fit Exchange. This will be a clothing swap for all of campus. Volunteers will perform check in, organize, sort and fold the clothes that are brought in.

The Nixon-Thorpe Psychology Club is hosting Domestic Violence Hygiene Drive from October 1st-30th, 2025.  Members will collect items such as wipes, sanitary napkins, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lip balm, hand sanitizer, etc. 

On October 30th students will earn service hours for assembling care packages for survivors of domestic violence. The packaging activity will take place at the New Student Center from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Students will not earn service hours for donating hygiene items.

Welcome to Purpose Learning Lab Literacy Program,

The reading buddies program allows older students the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition, they often come to see the value of reading. Students can not only promote good practices but gain self-esteem. Repeatedly reading easier books has been shown to improve reading abilities in poor readers, and this program provides students with a reason to read easier books.

Reading to younger students can help them develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Younger students should also read to their older buddies each week, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Because the program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. Ideally, buddy visits will be ongoing, and older and younger students will become familiar with one another and nurture a mutual interest in reading.

The Transitions Pantry will be receiving a large donation from community churches and will need volunteers to assist with collecting and organizing the items.

Passionate and committed volunteers are needed to help students K-12 reach their full academic potential and accomplish key educational milestones with customized learning plans tailored to their needs. 

The Society for Human Resources Management , Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society, The Neighborhood at NCCU, and Ohi Sigma Fraternity Inc. and Royal Courts representatives will walk high school seniors complete the college application process, including essays, transcript request, applying fee waivers or finding scholarships.

Black Girls for Liberation (BGfL) is an organization dedicated to nurturing Black girls through advocacy, education, and identity development. Through monthly programming, engaging curricula, and community service, we aim to cultivate a supportive community where Black girls can flourish.

Volunteer Opportunities: We are seeking passionate college students to join us in this transformative work.

Volunteers will:

Research Initiatives: Conduct research on Black girlhood and cultural identity development to inform our work and expand understanding in this field.

Social Media Support: Assist with creating, editing, and posting content that highlights our programs, events, and impact.

Video Production: Support in filming, editing, and uploading short videos to share the stories and voices of Black girls and our community.

Volunteers will assist in Women's Center outreach event. This event may be period packing, letter writing, or sending goods to community based organizations.

On behalf of the Office of Health Promotion and Education and the Counseling Center at North Carolina Central University, we are excited to announce the launch of the Harm Reduction Series in collaboration with the Durham County Department of Public Health.

This series is designed to ensure students are equipped with the knowledge and steps to take when it comes to preventing and responding to overdoses. The first session will be held on Wednesday, October 1st, at 5:30 PM in the AE Student Union Lobby. January 28, 2026, and  March 18, 2026 are 2 dates for the series. Be sure to attend. 

Participants can register using the QR code on the flyer and will have the chance to earn community service hours by attending two out of the three sessions.  Please register here. 

Breaking down tents, cleaning up materials, packing trailers. ADDITIONAL hours guaranteed due to late night time of shift. 

We have monthly co-ops on the third Thursday of every month where we provide fresh produce, meat and dried goods to the public. It is 100% free for anyone to come and pick up food. You will be helping with distribution. Distribution will consist of helping at the stations for people to take what they need.

Pampering Stations: Let the girls indulge in a variety of spa treatments tailored just for them! From mini facials to glittery manicures, our pampering stations will leave them feeling like royalty.

DIY Beauty Creations: Get creative with DIY beauty projects! From making their own shimmering lip gloss to crafting bath bombs with their favorite scents, the girls will have a blast customizing their own beauty products.

Relaxation Lounge: Take a break from the excitement in our relaxation lounge. With cozy pillows, soft blankets, and calming music, it's the perfect spot to unwind and recharge.

Healthy Snack Bar: Fuel up with delicious and nutritious snacks! From fruit skewers to refreshing smoothies, we'll keep their energy levels up so they can enjoy every moment of the day.

Craft Corner: Let their creativity shine at our craft corner! From designing personalized spa headbands to creating friendship bracelets, there's no limit to what they can make.

Mini Yoga Session: Help the girls find their zen with a mini yoga session. Led by our experienced instructor, they'll learn simple poses and breathing exercises to relax their minds and bodies.

Mommy & Me Time: Moms are welcome to join in the fun and share this special experience with their daughters!

Goody Bags: Each girl will receive a fabulous goody bag filled with spa-themed treats and surprises to take home.

Kidznotes has a new initiative to introduce students in grades 1-2 to music education at the Kidznotes Saturday Academy. Students have the option to enroll in one or more 10-week sessions in beginning violin, piano, and choir. Our volunteers have the option to be Musical Mentors, playing alongside our students and assisting the classroom teacher, or helping welcome families and assisting with administrative tasks.

Fall 2025 Saturday Academy Session: October 4-December 13, 2025

Available Shifts: 9:00-10:30 AM or 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Type of Shifts: One-time or recurring volunteering

Do you play an instrument and want to support beginning musicians in elementary, middle, and high school? Join us at Kidznotes as a Musical Mentor! We welcome college students with experience playing strings, winds, percussion, piano, or who sing in a choir to play alongside our student musicians. Having a Musical Mentor to play alongside students in class allows our students to build confidence and have support when they have questions. Musical Mentors can also work with our students one-on-one if they need extra help.

Volunteers are welcome for one-time and recurring volunteering.

The Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping support our Thursday morning tech programming. Every Thursday from 9am-11am we run "Just Ask George" a one-on-one tech support program where DCSL members can drop in to get help with their phones, email, setting up accounts online, and more. 

For this role, we are looking for volunteers who would shadow George and help provide one-on-one tech support. Most of the questions members come with are on the basic technology side, such as how to attach photos to a text, how to download a document from an email, etc. We have over 10 desktop computers connected to ethernet that you can use with the members to demonstrate things or to look up information yourself, that would help you answer member questions, so you do not need to provide any materials. This is a great opportunity to help older adults become more tech savvy and independent while working with a fun and interesting group of people. 

After completing one assistant shift, interested volunteers are welcome to work with the programs team to desin and run run their own special tech presentations on topics such as Google storage, A.I. , Social Media, streaming services, etc.. 

NCCU Athletics Game Day - Sports Information Department

Students will assist the Sports Information Department (SID) with camera operation, announcement, scoreboard operation and other media production activities for volleyball, football, basketball, track and field, softball, etc.
