Youth Tutors are asked to lead mentoring sessions once a week, for a duration of one year (or two semesters, Fall and Spring, as outlined in the Durham Public School calendar). A minimum commitment of at least one semester is required.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has a number of internship opportunities available for students in both the Raleigh and Durham areas and covering:

Internships are for 3 - 4 months, based on the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters (Jan - May, May - August, late August - December). 

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is an innovative hunger-relief organization serving seven counties within the Triangle and surrounding.  We believe hunger IS fixable if the community works together to do two things: create sources of healthy food in every low-income neighborhood and grow opportunities for people to provide for themselves by learning job skills or growing their own food.

From BackPack Buddies to nutrition education; mobile markets to community gardens; culinary job training to agriculture training, we go directly to people in need and create what works to empower them.  We feed. We teach. We grow…to create a hunger-free and healthy community.

Hope Reins is a 501c3 nonprofit and one of the country’s leading faith-based equine mentorship programs. We serve kids, aged 5-18, who are experiencing life-threatening trauma at our 38-acre ranch, where they are paired with a trusted mentor and a rescued horse for a series of 90-minute sessions over a 3-year period. This journey leads to resilience and coping skills that can last a lifetime. All services are offered at no cost to kids and their families.

Student will volunteer to help sort recycling and clean up green spaces in Durham on several occasions.

The Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping support our Thursday morning tech programming. Every Thursday from 9am-11am we run "Just Ask George" a one-on-one tech support program where DCSL members can drop in to get help with their phones, email, setting up accounts online, and more. 

For this role, we are looking for volunteers who would shadow George and help provide one-on-one tech support. Most of the questions members come with are on the basic technology side, such as how to attach photos to a text, how to download a document from an email, etc. We have over 10 desktop computers connected to ethernet that you can use with the members to demonstrate things or to look up information yourself, that would help you answer member questions, so you do not need to provide any materials. This is a great opportunity to help older adults become more tech savvy and independent while working with a fun and interesting group of people. 

After completing one assistant shift, interested volunteers are welcome to work with the programs team to desin and run run their own special tech presentations on topics such as Google storage, A.I. , Social Media, streaming services, etc.. 

This event was a Food Drive at Durham Rescue where students made plates for the less fortunate members of the community.

Black Girls for Liberation (BGfL) is an organization dedicated to nurturing Black girls through advocacy, education, and identity development. Through monthly programming, engaging curricula, and community service, we aim to cultivate a supportive community where Black girls can flourish.

Volunteer Opportunities: We are seeking passionate college students to join us in this transformative work.

Volunteers will:

Research Initiatives: Conduct research on Black girlhood and cultural identity development to inform our work and expand understanding in this field.

Social Media Support: Assist with creating, editing, and posting content that highlights our programs, events, and impact.

Video Production: Support in filming, editing, and uploading short videos to share the stories and voices of Black girls and our community.

The NCCU Counseling Center provides opportunities throughout the year to encourage our campus community to become advocates of mental health well-being. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is one of the ways students, faculty, and staff members can learn approaches to help others.

MHFA training provides effective ways to respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or emergency and connect them to appropriate resources. Attendees learn to recognize the signs of disruption that may occur for a specific problem or as an ongoing concern. Students can earn service hours by completing this training. The 2-hour self-paced module and pre-work must be completed before attending the remaining part of the training that is in-person (ILT). 

Registration is open to current NCCU administrators, faulty, staff, and students, and community members. Registration is at a tiered cost. Do you play an instrument and want to support beginning musicians in elementary, middle, and high school? Join us at Kidznotes as a Musical Mentor! We welcome college students with experience playing strings, winds, percussion, piano, or who sing in a choir to play alongside our student musicians. Having a Musical Mentor to play alongside students in class allows our students to build confidence and have support when they have questions. Musical Mentors can also work with our students one-on-one if they need extra help.

Volunteers are welcome for one-time and recurring volunteering.

NCCU Athletics Game Day - Sports Information Department

Students will assist the Sports Information Department (SID) with camera operation, announcement, scoreboard operation and other media production activities for volleyball, football, basketball, track and field, softball, etc.

Take our handy dandy cleaning cart and make the stores sparkle! This cart comes with a checklist that includes all the possible cleaning tasks for each store along with a duster, wet wipes, and several cleaning products. Great for folks who like a clean space and have attention to detail! This shift also includes picking up trash from the yard and lot, tidying the front bed and entrance area, and making sure we look good on the outside as well as the inside!

Clothes + Accessories Processing
This shift involves fixing clothes around the store, collecting hangers, tidying the floor, and processing clothes and accessories donations.

Frames + Housewares Processing
This shift involves processing our picture frames and housewares in our Thrift Store. Housewares includes kitchen items, decor, linens, and more.


We offer several types of volunteer opportunities at our Reuse Arts Center:

Bag + Box Processing

For detail-oriented folks who love sorting, organizing, and supporting some of the grittier aspects of our mission of reuse! This shift involves sorting through bags we have accumulated over the week, and separating them into different usable and unusable categories. Additionally, you will break down cardboard boxes for recycling.

Paper + Office Processing
This is a great opportunity for anyone with a real passion for ~school and office supplies~! Extra points if you have some skills and knowledge around paper and scrapbooking and of course like to tidy. This involves organizing binders, sorting paper and other items, and placing and pricing supplies.

Scrap + Barrel Item Processing (Afternoons only, no Wednesdays)
This shift involves sorting the barrel items and preloved materials we receive in bulk, such as pill bottles, medals, egg cartons, and more. This shift involves blue barrel section maintenance, packaging bulk items, and sorting items by color and size.

Tile, Wood, + Hardware Processing
This shift involves processing our hardware donations such as tools, paint, nails and screws, garden items, and more. It also involves culling and organizing our tile and wood section.

Toy + Game Processing
This shift involves testing toy donations, putting board games and puzzles together, repackaging items for the floor, and keeping the toy section tidy.

Yarn + Notions Processing
This involves bagging elastic, wrapping seam binding, pairing knitting needles, and packaging shoelaces.

One of the program initiatives of West End Community Foundation, Inc., is the CommUNITY ScholarsAfter School Program. Some of the students who need the program would not be able to attend if we charged a fee because many of them qualify for free and reduced lunches. The Museum of Durham History is making moves this summer: we would like to attend 2 different farmer's market, each once a month, with a marketing table and some traveling exhibit materials. For this to happen, we would need lots of volunteer help to set up, staff, and break down. 

These would be both the Durham Farmer's Market at Durham Central Park and the Black Farmer's Market at Durham Tech. The first date would be April 26th at Durham Central Park, with 2 volunteer shifts: 8:30am-10:30am, and 10:30am-12:30pm. The second date would be May 4th at Durham Technical Community College, with 2 volunteer shifts: 11:30am-2:30pm and 2:30pm-4:30pm.

The setup would include a tent, a table and chairs. We would have marketing materials available for people to grab, as well as sign-up sheets for our newsletter. Most importantly, these farmer's markets will be a way for us to show off our Faces of Durham traveling exhibit. It is our goal this summer to expand into public spaces and community gatherings by bringing our historical content directly to folks outside the museum.

Our ReStore proceeds support Habitat's Mission and divert tons of usable materials from local landfills each year. Calling all Mass Communication majors! Students to Scholars is seeking a volunteer to jumpstart and manage our social media presence. Our mission is to empower promising students from under-resourced communities to access and excel in independent middle schools, preparing them for success in high school and college. We are seeking someone to create impactful social content aligned with our vision and post monthly or bi-monthly on our Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts. 

Do you love helping kids succeed on homework? Are you excited about helping kids catch up to their peers academically? Then Academic Coaching (tutoring) could be for you! Students to Scholars is seeking Academic Coaches to work with our students. Academic Coaches work in-person or virtually with a 3rd-5th grader at least once per week to study math and/or reading. Each coaching session is one-on-one and lasts about an hour. Most in person sessions take place at one of the Durham Boys and Girls Clubs between 3:30pm and 5:30pm.  Virtual sessions are arranged at a time that works for the student's schedule and the tutor's schedule. 

The Students to Scholars Board of Directors is looking for people with diverse talents to serve on a board committee where their ideas, participation, engagement, contributions, advice, and input will be immensely valued. PALs meet one-on-one mentees twice a semester, host events and socials, and connect students to campus resources. PALs also aid in the administration of the Summer Access Program, a 4-week virtual enrichment Program for incoming first year and transfer students who have a documented diagnosis or is first-generation and/or from a limited-income background.

Recreation and Wellness (RecWell) is in need of student volunteers to assist with program operations in Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Fitness, Informal Recreation and Special Events.  The student volunteers will assist with creating an environment which is welcoming to faculty/staff and community members who utilize campus recreation facilities.  

*assist with cleaning and maintaining the Outdoor Recreational Complex which serves the Durham Community

*assist with cleaning and maintaining the facility in which patrons utilize

*assist with managing of special events to include Wheel Chair basketball, Dodge Drink, Zumbafest, etc.

To provide supportive and professional service to NCCU students, faculty, staff, and community for the Office of Community Engagement and Service. 

Work Study students need the following qualifications:
