Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Museum of Durham History as we provide programs and experiences to Durham residents and visitors. Our commitment to volunteers is to provide meaningful volunteer experience and effective direction in an environment that is friendly, comfortable, educational, and fun.

We are specifically looking for long-term volunteers who are able to help on-site twice per month on average. Available shifts include Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am - 1 pm, 1-3 pm, 3-5 pm; Sunday, 12-3 pm, 3-5 pm.

Key Responsibilities:

Assists with general museum reception and visitor services, meets and greets the general public at the reception desk Provides general information about the museum, exhibits and the community Answers the telephone Assist in opening and closing procedures, depending on shift schedule Relays accurate information about planned programs/events to visitors Ensures all exhibit areas are tidy and functioning Assists visitors with recording their personal memories in the Story Room Collects visitor feedback and communicates to staff Assists the Weekend Manager with any special projects May also assist in special projects based on skill-set and evaluation

 Skills to be Enhanced or Developed on the Job:

Will learn about the history of Durham Learn to work within a team environment Will learn about aspects of visitor/hospitality services through training and on-the-job experience An understanding of the inner workings of a non-profit museum.

Qualifications and Skills Preferred:

Our commitment to volunteers is to provide meaningful volunteer experience and effective direction in an environment that is friendly, comfortable, educational, and fun.

We are specifically looking for long-term volunteers who are able to help on-site twice per month on average. Available shifts include Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am - 1 pm, 1-3 pm, 3-5 pm; Sunday, 12-3 pm, 3-5 pm.

Key Responsibilities:

Assists with general museum reception and visitor services, meets and greets the general public at the reception desk Provides general information about the museum, exhibits and the community Answers the telephone Assist in opening and closing procedures, depending on shift schedule Relays accurate information about planned programs/events to visitors Ensures all exhibit areas are tidy and functioning Assists visitors with recording their personal memories in the Story Room Collects visitor feedback and communicates to staff Assists the Weekend Manager with any special projects May also assist in special projects based on skill-set and evaluation

Black Girls Liberation (BGfL) is an organization dedicated to nurturing Black girls through advocacy, education, and identity development. Through monthly programming, engaging curricula, and community service, we aim to cultivate a supportive community where Black girls can flourish.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are seeking passionate college students to join us in this transformative work. Volunteers will:

•Build Relationships: Develop meaningful connections with the girls in our programs and serve as mentors.


•Assist with Monthly Programming: Support activities and discussions during our gatherings, focusing on identity development, advocacy tools, and fostering healthy relationships.

•Participate in Social Outings and Community Service: Join our girls in activities that deepen their community engagement and personal growth.

•Time Commitment: 2-3 gatherings per month, each lasting 3-4 hours.

Internship Opportunities

Interns will have the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the work of Black Girls Liberation, gaining hands-on experience in programming, research, and advocacy:

•Programming Support: Assist with curriculum development and program facilitation for Black girls and educators.

•Research Initiatives: Conduct research on Black girlhood and cultural identity development to inform our work and expand understanding in this field.

•Mentorship and Leadership Development: Work closely with program participants to foster leadership skills and personal growth.

•Time Commitment: 5-10 hours per month, with opportunities to grow based on interest and availability.

The Technician Assistant (TA) program at the Duke Lemur Center began in 2008 and is designed to give students and the public an opportunity to volunteer their time and be involved in the husbandry of lemurs. TAs assist full-time Primate Technicians with a variety of animal care tasks, including diet preparation, cleaning of animal areas, development of enrichment, behavioral observations, and daily upkeep of the facility. Our TA volunteers are an invaluable resource for the center and include undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as professional and retired members of the community.

Requirements to become a Technician Assistant:

Commitment to work one 4-hour shift each week for a minimum of 6 months
Results of TB test that has been administered within a year of start date
Proof of MMR Vaccine
Proof of current health insurance
Age 18 or above

Fundraising Intern Description

Purpose Learning Lab, Inc is seeking a seasoned fundraiser to join our tight-knit team. In this role, you will use your expert communication skills and keen sense of initiative to spot fundraising opportunities, develop relationships with potential donors, and manage fundraising campaigns. By coordinating events, writing proposals, and recruiting and leading volunteers, you will hone your speaking, writing, and leadership abilities while moving Purpose Learning Lab closer to its financial goals.

Fundraising Intern Description

Purpose Learning Lab, Inc is seeking a seasoned fundraiser to join our tight-knit team. In this role, you will use your expert communication skills and keen sense of initiative to spot fundraising opportunities, develop relationships with potential donors, and manage fundraising campaigns. By coordinating events, writing proposals, and recruiting and leading volunteers, you will hone your speaking, writing, and leadership abilities while moving Purpose Learning Lab closer to its financial goals.

The ideal candidate will be motivated, professional, and organized, with a knack for research. We are looking for someone who believes in Purpose Learning Lab's mission and will demonstrate exceptional drive to further our existing fundraising efforts and help strategize and deliver new ones.

Objectives of this Role Promote awareness of the organization’s mission and work Cultivate a network of dedicated donors and volunteers Spot new fundraising opportunities Plan fundraising initiatives to help the organization meet financial goals Form strong relationships with external stakeholders Ensure major donors are satisfied and kept in the loop Weekly and/or Monthly Responsibilities Research individuals, corporations, and foundations that may be interested in gift-giving Effectively convey the organization’s mission, vision, and programs to potential donors Craft grant applications and fundraising proposals Strategize and successfully execute fundraising campaigns Organize fundraising events while overseeing teams of volunteers Manage a budget and track whether goals are being met Skills and Qualifications Fundraising, sales, or marketing experience Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills Ability to lead and motivate colleagues and volunteers Strong attention to detail A passion for research Adept at managing tasks, planning events, and balancing priorities Preferred Qualifications Pursing a degree in communications, business, public relations, or a related field Competence in Microsoft Office suite and donor management systems Experience writing grant proposals, press releases, and/or fundraising letters Confidence with public speaking Legal or accounting experience a plus

Our Expectations

Youth Tutors are asked to lead mentoring sessions once a week, for a duration of one year (or two semesters, Fall and Spring, as outlined in the Durham Public School calendar). A minimum commitment of at least one semester is required. Due to the emotional and academic effects of COVID paired with school closures, Purpose Learning Lab, Inc is currently conducting virtual tutoring for K-8th grade participants. Times below:

Should be comfortable working one-on-one with students with diverse disabilities Strong commitment to community service Previous experience working with young children preferred Ability to work well with a diverse population of people Must have reliable transportation Must be willing to clean

 

We offer a number of hands on innovative learning labs and we would love for you to demonstrate your skills. Please know our experiments are designed to stimulate a curiosity about STEM careers.

Volunteer: Public Relations /Social Media/Marketing Coordinator

The Public Relations and Marketing Person is responsible for creating exposure opportunities for the Leaders of Tomorrow organization which is the youth arm of the National Black MBA Association.  A National Organization with over 33 Chapters across the United States.  

 

This outgoing, take charge, person will be responsible to help put together a strategy for the organization that has the organization visible in all middle schools and high schools.  Focused on creating media opportunities with radio, television, print ads, and social media.
