One of the program initiatives of West End Community Foundation, Inc., is the CommUNITY ScholarsAfter School Program. The mission of this program is to offer free after-school services to Kindergartenthrough seventh grade West End Community students. Some of the students who need the program would not be able to attend if we charged a fee because many of them qualify for free and reduced lunches. Our goals are to produce students who master life skills taught during the school day, excel in reading and are proficient in math. Moreover, we strive to produce students who are responsible for their own learning process. Strategies to achieving our goals include providing mentoring, specialized tutoring, reading challenges, assistance in boosting End-Of-Grade testing scores, school supplies, daily snacks, enrichment activities and field trips.

Welcome to Purpose Learning Lab Literacy Program,

The reading buddies program allows older students the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition, they often come to see the value of reading. Students can not only promote good practices but gain self-esteem. Repeatedly reading easier books has been shown to improve reading abilities in poor readers, and this program provides students with a reason to read easier books.

Reading to younger students can help them develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Younger students should also read to their older buddies each week, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Because the program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. Ideally, buddy visits will be ongoing, and older and younger students will become familiar with one another and nurture a mutual interest in reading.

We are looking for personable, welcoming, and detail oriented volunteers to assist with minor administrative tasks, answering phones, and checking participants in and out of our Adult Day Health main center (ADH) on either Wednesdays, or Thursdays from 1:00-5:00PM. This role is integral to supporting the Durham Center for Senior Life's Adult Day Health program, which provides hands on care, meals, and activities to adults 18+ who are unable to be independent during the day due to conditions such as late stage dementia and other physical or mental challenges and disabilities. The ADH program is in place so that caregivers can feel at ease while they go to work or run errands, knowing their loved one is have a fun and social day. The ADH receptionist serves as a point person for staff, participants and their families and will be asked to make a regular weekly or bimonthly commitment. Please note that one key responsibility will be to make sure the participants do not leave the building on their own, and you may need to step in to keep doors locked and participants inside. however, this is not a frequent occurrence. If you have questions about this responsibility, please reach out to 919-688-8247 ext. 124.

The Museum of Durham History is making moves this summer: we would like to attend 2 different farmer's market, each once a month, with a marketing table and some traveling exhibit materials. For this to happen, we would need lots of volunteer help to set up, staff, and break down. 

These would be both the Durham Farmer's Market at Durham Central Park and the Black Farmer's Market at Durham Tech. The first date would be April 26th at Durham Central Park, with 2 volunteer shifts: 8:30am-10:30am, and 10:30am-12:30pm. The second date would be May 4th at Durham Technical Community College, with 2 volunteer shifts: 11:30am-2:30pm and 2:30pm-4:30pm.

The setup would include a tent, a table and chairs. We would have marketing materials available for people to grab, as well as sign-up sheets for our newsletter. Most importantly, these farmer's markets will be a way for us to show off our Faces of Durham traveling exhibit. It is our goal this summer to expand into public spaces and community gatherings by bringing our historical content directly to folks outside the museum.

Briggs Ave Community Garden is an agriculture education space owned by the North Carolina Agriculture Foundation at NCSU. We are an Extension program offering applied food and nutrition education with a seed to table approach. The Students to Scholars Board of Directors is looking for a Treasurer. The Treasurer will be responsible for downloading bank and credit card charges, reconciling our account, preparing a monthly report for a monthly board meeting and serving on the Fundraising Committee. Board meetings and committee meetings meet virtually once a month each during the work week (Monday-Friday) for an hour.

This volunteer position is an academic year-long commitment from September through May. The work is completely remote and no transportation is required.

Our mission is to empower promising students from under-resourced communities to access and excel in independent middle schools, preparing them for success in high school and college. We are seeking someone to create impactful social content aligned with our vision and post monthly or bi-monthly on our Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts. 

Do you love helping kids succeed on homework? Are you excited about helping kids catch up to their peers academically? Then Academic Coaching (tutoring) could be for you! Students to Scholars is seeking Academic Coaches to work with our students. Academic Coaches work in-person or virtually with a 3rd-5th grader at least once per week to study math and/or reading. Each coaching session is one-on-one and lasts about an hour. Most in person sessions take place at one of the Durham Boys and Girls Clubs between 3:30pm and 5:30pm.  Virtual sessions are arranged at a time that works for the student's schedule and the tutor's schedule. 

The Students to Scholars Board of Directors is looking for people with diverse talents to serve on a board committee where their ideas, participation, engagement, contributions, advice, and input will be immensely valued. Students to Scholars is looking for NCCU faculty and staff to serve as a guest speaker at our monthly Success and Support Event, which is for the 6th through 8th graders in our program. The Political Science Department is seeking dedicated volunteers to support various initiatives and activities that enhance student learning and engagement. Ship Outreach Center in Raleigh is in need of volunteers for Homework Club at Ship Leadership Academy.

The Homework Club provides free tutoring for school-aged children grades 1-12. Volunteers help students with various subjects, homework assignments, and test preparation.

Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays for High School grade tutoring from 2:30p - 4:30p and/or for Elementary grade tutoring from 4p-6p. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity please contact us at Christena@theshipchurch.com

On-Call Driver Requirements:

As an On-Call Driver, you will have the opportunity to step in when our weekday schedule drivers are unavailable, ensuring that our Durham seniors continue to receive the meals they rely on. Right now we are looking for individuals available Thursdays and Fridays to join the team!

You can delivers meals—and smiles—to clients each weekday, help pack and load meals onto delivery vehicles, or even check in on seniors in the comfort of your own home. We have something for everybody!

Meals on Wheels of Durham is seeking volunteers to make phone calls to our home-bound senior clients.

Call our seniors in Durham. You can call from anyplace you have access to the internet and a computer.

Calls are made on Wednesdays and/or Fridays from your remote location. You will receive that day's "Wellness Sheet" via email at 8am. Calls can be made between 9am and noon. Each route averages 60 minutes (10-14 clients). Sign up for up to 3 routes per day.

Unloaders will arrive at the MOWD office at 8am prior to our delivery truck arriving. Unloaders will be grouped together to unload 500-700 boxes weighing 5-10lbs. Unloaders work together to unload the vehicle in a timely, safe and fun manner. While boxes are being unloaded, unloaders continue to work together to stage boxes for the day’s delivery. This is a more labor intensive volunteer opportunity that will replace your gym session for the day! This position requires determination and strong communication skills to work with a highly diverse group of people!

The opportunity is available Monday-Friday from 8am-9am.

Deliver hot meals to seniors in Durham. We have delivery routes throughout Durham county. You can deliver by yourself, with a friend, with your pet, or with a group.

Available Monday to Friday. Arrive to MOWD facilities (2522 Ross Rd Durham) to pick up meals between 9:30 am - 10:30 am and allow 1.5 - 2 hours for delivery. Volunteers can get scheduled to come once a week, once a month, or as often as they would like. Must use or have access to a vehicle and gas to make deliveries. Must also be able to download and use our Mobile Meals app to navigate your routes.
