This particular Sunday, Harvest Sunday is a Garden & Gather theme, a community wellness and garden experience. We will need volunteers to assist with set up, check in and break down.

Join us in the Community Garden Sacred Soil just minutes from campus! Come get your hands in the soil, meet new friends, and help grow fresh produce that supports sustainability and community wellness.

No experience needed—just bring your energy, curiosity, and love for nature.  Volunteer with us and see how a few hours in the garden can grow food, friendships, and a stronger community.

We need your support for the Global Village that starts before the 2026 Durham CROP Hunger Walk.  You can earn extra hours and help educate the walkers about how the funds they are raising are helping to solve local needs. You can participate and represent your student organization.

There are five volunteer choices: outreach advocate, hunger voter, budget rope, sack race and face painter.

2) Respond to the opportunity in Get Connected.

Commitment is for 90 minutes, but you will need to arrive by 12:00pm in order to get parking. You will be able to walk in the CROP Walk when it starts if you so desire.

All volunteers for this activity will receive a FREE t-shirt designed by a NCCU Art major.

You will earn 2 hours for volunteering with the Global Village. If the slots are filled for this opportunity, you can still participate in the CROP Hunger walk for 10 community engagement hours.

Check in and check out at the statue near Duke Chapel. The staff person will be wearing an orange safety vest.  Please join us in making this the most successful village for the walkers ever!

The 29th Annual Chancellor's Walk and Health Fair is a fundraising event focused on bringing awareness to issues surrounding health disparities (including obesity-related cardiovascular diseases, men's health, and aging).

The theme: "Protecting Health and Peace From Self to Community." 

Students must complete the following:  1. Attend the Walk, 2. Visit Health Vendors, 3. Attend Presentations following the Walk, 4. Donate $5, and 5. Complete a Reflection.

Families Moving Forward's annual Rock the Block Day of Service will be on Saturday, April 11th, 2026 from 8:00AM- 12:00PM. Rock the Block is our largest facility service event of the year. Volunteers will be completing a variety of projects including mulching and general landscaping, deep-cleaning community areas in the programming and residential buildings and a few light painting projects. Please note that these projects require hands-on participation and can be physically demanding, come prepared to get your hands dirty. This is a great opportunity make a tangible difference maintaining the safety, health and aesthetics of our campus.

CANDOR Farm supports the West End Free Market, by growing foods that reflect and respect local preferences, ensuring that fresh, culturally relevant produce is available at market. This also strengthens the market’s ability to sustain itself over time. This cycle of care and collaboration dismantles traditional hierarchies of food access, replacing them with a framework of shared abundance.

Please wear long pants and sleeves. Bring water, sun protection and anything else to make yourself comfortable. We'll come together to make friends, pull weeds and our priority will be harvesting and processing goods for West End Free Market the next day.

We do not have onsite access to a bathroom. Foster's market closes at 3pm, there is a gas station across the street and CANDOR's building is at Part and Parcel about a mile drive away.

The Movement Street NCCU and Christian Coleman members will be serving meals at the Durham Rescue Mission.

DCSL is looking for motivated and hard-working volunteers to help transform our common spaces into a beautiful setting for our Annual Gala Fundraiser! 

Volunteers will assist with decorating, moving tables and chairs, setting up auction and photobooth areas, and similar tasks. There are two shifts available, one for the morning and one for the afternoon- you are welcome to sign up for one or both shifts. 

CKI Spring Planting with Keep Durham Beautiful: Time 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM (4 Hours Given Travel Included). Join members of McMannen United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 21 from 8:30AM-12PM to plant multiple flowering perennials, bushes, and trees as part of landscape improvements and modifications around the 150-year old historic McMannen Church located at 4102 Neal Road. Volunteers from the Durham Master Gardeners will also assist.

Bull City B.E.S.T. is looking for volunteers to support elementary students as they prepare for their End-of-Grade (EOG) math assessments. Volunteers will work with students one hour per week, helping them practice math skills, review key concepts, and build confidence. This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with children and want to make a positive impact on student success in our community.

Welcome to Purpose Learning Lab Literacy Program,

The reading buddies program allows older students the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition, they often come to see the value of reading. Students can not only promote good practices but gain self-esteem. Repeatedly reading easier books has been shown to improve reading abilities in poor readers, and this program provides students with a reason to read easier books.

Reading to younger students can help them develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Younger students should also read to their older buddies each week, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Because the program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. Ideally, buddy visits will be ongoing, and older and younger students will become familiar with one another and nurture a mutual interest in reading.

The Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping support our Tuesday morning tech program at our new location at 4900 N. Roxboro Street in Durham. From 9am-11am we run "Just Ask George" a one-on-one tech support program where center members can drop in to get help with their phones, email, setting up accounts online, and more. 

For this role, we are looking for volunteers who would shadow George and help provide one-on-one tech support. Most of the questions members come with are on the basic technology side, such as how to attach photos to a text, how to manage social media, how to download a document from an email, etc. You are welcome to bring your phone and laptop for demonstrations, or to look up information.

This is a great opportunity to help older adults become more tech savvy and independent while working with a fun and interesting group of people!

Join us on Saturday, March 21 from 10AM to 12PM to clean up South Alston Ave from Apex Hwy to Riddle Rd, as well as around Campus Hills Park, with the Durham Area Master Aquatics (DAMA)!

KDB is participating in the national Greatest American Cleanup campaign along with hundreds of other NC-based Keep America Beautiful affiliates this Spring. Join us for a day of massive impact during the largest cleanup in US history!

Volunteers will meet at Campus Hills Park. This event is open to all ages - volunteers under the age of 8 will particpate in cleanup around the park.

All supplies will be provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes that are comfortable for walking, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Pants and long sleeves are strongly recommended. Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and a small backpack for carrying personal items.

This volunteer will be stationed at our reception and/or welcome desk to welcome participants to our center, direct them to programming, and answer phones to take messages during out slower evening hours from 5-7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will provide a tour and training so volunteers can be comfortable and confident when working with members. Ideally, volunteers will be able to commit to multiple shifts. 

NCCU students collect and deliver toys for the students at Hope Valley Elementary School

Join us in spreading care and support through our We Care Service Project! Volunteers can earn service hours by helping assemble and distribute our monthly care bags for families in need at Fayetteville Street Elementary School.

Swim for Charlie will be hosting a masters (swimmers ages 18-90) swim meet Sunday morning April 12th at the Orange County Sportsplex in Hillsborough, NC a 20 minute drive from the NCCU campus.

The meet is scheduled to start at 8:50 and timers are asked to get to the pool by 8:15 for an orientation.  

To run the meet Swim for Charlie will need 20 timers. 

Timers have 2 responsibilities: 1) make sure the right swimmer is in the right event, the right heat, and the right lane and 2) provide accurate backup times for every swim. 

A timer will be assigned to a lane and each lane will have a clipboard with a sheet of paper with the names of the swimmers for that lane with space to record the time for the swimmer. 

Timers are given a stopwatch to use at the meet.  The stopwatch is started when the starting beep sounds and is stopped when the swimmer touches the wall at the end of the swim.  Timers will then record the time on the sheet on the clipboard.

There are 2 timers for each lane.  There are chairs for the timers at each lane. 

Timers will be given a Swim for Charlie tee shirt and will be provided hospitality snacks/drinks throughout the meet. 

Instructors will teach 2nd grade Durham Public School students basic water safety and swimming skills.  Each 2nd grade student has 8 lessons over a 2-week period.  Instructors are given a detailed handbook and go through a training session.  Laminated teaching aids are available poolside during the lessons.  Instructor requirements are the ability to do a front to back float, a basic (elementary) backstroke, front crawl (freestyle) stroke, and tread water.  Instructors should have a desire to teach elementary school children, be patient and kind.  Instructors will need to complete a free online Durham Public Schools background check.  This is a very rewarding experience for both the 2nd grade students and the instructors. 

Set up the market, unpack boxes, sort foods, restock shelves, pack delivery boxes and/or greet market members; Participate in market, support our mostly elderly/mature adult customers navigate market and carry items to their transportation, break down boxes, weigh each member's produce as they check out, and/or use your vehicle to deliver grocery boxes to households within 3 miles of the market (most are within 1 mile). 

About the Market: The West End Free Market provides the West End, Lyon Park, and Lakewood communities with organic, local, high-quality produce and dry goods twice a month. Currently, there are over 350 members. This market is made possible through the strength of partnerships: West End Community Foundation, Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield, Duke Campus Farm, Farmer Foodshare, Root Causes, Happy Dirt, Ninth Steet Bakery, and Seal the Seasons. The West End Free Market values dignity, access, responsiveness, sustainability, collective care, and a sense of abundance for all. Here are some of the ways these values show up at market: Member enrollment is free and requires no proof of need.   The market takes place at the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon Park which is fully ADA compliant.   Disabled and Elder market members can receive delivery. On-site shoppers can receive assistance in getting groceries to their transportation. ​ The market is open to elders (65+) only for the first 30 minutes.    Additionally, market materials are available in three languages: English, Spanish, and Arabic.

CEF is a local nonprofit with offices in Durham and Chapel Hill that creates a community of support to address issues long-term that are related to economic justice, housing insecurity, and homelessness. CEF connects volunteer advocates and interns with community Members to work towards Members' goals, such as gaining housing, employment, and understanding savings. Members and advocates work together to navigate the barriers to reaching those goals, while also working toward systems-level changes, guided by Members' lived experiences of the complex social services landscapes of Durham and Orange Counties. About the Internship

CEF Summer internships offer the opportunity for full-time and part-time interns to deepen their commitment to the Durham community. They will be challenged to broaden their knowledge around community resources, programs, and antiracism work, as well as challenge their skills as an advocate while working alongside folks experiencing housing and financial insecurity. All interns MUST be able to attend each part of the internship, including the training.

Full-time Summer interns work with CEF in a full-time capacity for 10 weeks over the Summer. Interns will spend roughly 24 hours per week supporting Members as advocates and working collaboratively with staff on projects that match our organization’s needs as well as your own interests, skills, and passion areas. This is a paid opportunity with a rate of $15.50/hour. Part-time Summer interns will spend roughly 8-10 hours per week completing the same tasks outlined above, with a primary focus on meetings with Members (this is an unpaid opportunity).

DCSL is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with our upcoming Phone-a-Thon supporting the Young at Heart Gala. Volunteers will use a provided call sheet and script to contact local businesses and invite them to support DCSL. Shifts are available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking with business representatives, professional on the phone, and confident reading from a script. For those who are stronger with email outreach, there is also a remote volunteer opportunity available.

FSE Club Days are monthly enrichment days designed to provide students with engaging, hands-on experiences outside of their regular classroom routine. These days allow students to explore creative, physical, and collaborative activities in a structed and supportive environment led by our mentors and volunteers.

Swim Instructors will teach 2nd grade Durham Public School students basic water safety and swimming skills.  Each 2nd grade student has 8 lessons over a 2-week period.  Instructors are given a detailed handbook and go through a training session.  Laminated teaching aids are available poolside during the lessons.  Instructor requirements are the ability to do a front to back float, a basic (elementary) backstroke, front crawl (freestyle) stroke, and tread water.  Instructors should have a desire to teach elementary school children, be patient and kind.  Instructors will need to complete a free online Durham Public Schools background check.  This is a very rewarding experience for both the 2nd grade students and the instructors.

Ranch Chores is an essential part of what happens at Hope Reins. We work together to maintain a clean, beautiful, and safe area for the kids in our program. During Ranch Chores we typically participate in activities like the ones listed below: 

Invasive plant species removal in pastures - helps keep our pastures healthy and nutrition-rich for the horses

Fence staining - with miles of four board fence, it's an ongoing process!

Trail construction - our kids love to walk the trails with their mentors during sessions

Clearing fence lines - from downed limbs, brush and debris

Weeding and gardening - to ensure the Ranch is beautiful for our sessions kids

Hope Reins is a 501c3 nonprofit and one of the country’s leading faith-based equine mentorship programs.
