Our Expectations

STEM Education Facilitators are asked to lead enrichment sessions once a week, for a duration of one year (or two semesters, Fall and Spring, as outlined in the Durham Public School calendar). A minimum commitment of at least one semester is required. Due to the emotional and academic effects of COVID paired with school closures, Purpose Learning Lab, Inc is currently conducting virtual tutoring for K-8th grade participants. Times below:

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has a number of internship opportunities available for students in both the Raleigh and Durham areas and covering:

Internships are for 3 - 4 months, based on the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters (Jan - May, May - August, late August - December). 

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is an innovative hunger-relief organization serving seven counties within the Triangle and surrounding.  We believe hunger IS fixable if the community works together to do two things: create sources of healthy food in every low-income neighborhood and grow opportunities for people to provide for themselves by learning job skills or growing their own food.

From BackPack Buddies to nutrition education; mobile markets to community gardens; culinary job training to agriculture training, we go directly to people in need and create what works to empower them.  We feed. We teach. We grow…to create a hunger-free and healthy community.

Hope Reins is a 501c3 nonprofit and one of the country’s leading faith-based equine mentorship programs. We serve kids, aged 5-18, who are experiencing life-threatening trauma at our 38-acre ranch, where they are paired with a trusted mentor and a rescued horse for a series of 90-minute sessions over a 3-year period. This journey leads to resilience and coping skills that can last a lifetime. All services are offered at no cost to kids and their families.

We’re looking for volunteers to assist with guest services for a community-based organization that regularly hosts public events. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, providing information, assisting with event flow, and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Perfect for students interested in customer service, event support, or community engagement.

The Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping support our Thursday morning tech programming. Every Thursday from 9am-11am we run "Just Ask George" a one-on-one tech support program where DCSL members can drop in to get help with their phones, email, setting up accounts online, and more. 

For this role, we are looking for volunteers who would shadow George and help provide one-on-one tech support. Most of the questions members come with are on the basic technology side, such as how to attach photos to a text, how to download a document from an email, etc. We have over 10 desktop computers connected to ethernet that you can use with the members to demonstrate things or to look up information yourself, that would help you answer member questions, so you do not need to provide any materials. This is a great opportunity to help older adults become more tech savvy and independent while working with a fun and interesting group of people. 

After completing one assistant shift, interested volunteers are welcome to work with the programs team to desin and run run their own special tech presentations on topics such as Google storage, A.I. , Social Media, streaming services, etc..

The Community Empowerment Fund (CEF) is an organization that works to combat the racial wealth gap in Durham. With various programs, along with online financial coaching sessions and resources related to housing, CEF strives to equip Members of our community with the tools they may need to achieve financial independence.

As a volunteer advocate, you would be working with community Members to accomplish their goals in hour-long meetings, typically on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Meetings can range from discussing housing options locally and applying to jobs, to helping them find childcare for their kids. Advocates are expected to volunteer for 2 hours a week and attend community calls and trainings meant to advance their understanding of issues pertaining to racial equity and the specific needs of Members. Additionally, volunteers can engage in advocacy-related projects to support Members.

We’re excited to celebrate Kwanzaa at the Hayti Heritage Center, and we’re calling on our NCCU community to help make this year’s event a beautiful success! Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles and time slots to support setup, greeter, usher, breakdown, and more.

UHP will be supporting the Campus Pantry and the Family Resources Center at New Hope Elementary School and Fayetteville Street by collecting food, clothing and hygiene items.  Asked for items include:

Womens Clothing ( all sizes) in good condition.

Men's Clothing (all sizes) in good condition.

Children's Clothing and Shoes (all sizes) in good condition.

Diapers, wipes, baby formula, baby food, fresh meat, fresh produce, shelf stable milk, whole grains, pop tab canned goods, eggs, spices, dry cereals, crackers, cooking oil, components of whole meals packaged into ziplock bags, instant coffee, tea, tuna fish, 

Shampoo, conditioner, soap, hair care products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, feminine hygiene products, laundry or dishwashing detergent.

Students can earn up to 1 hour per 5 items (from the asked for list). Up to 8 hours available per student.  Box for donation is in the University Honors Program Office Suite, in the Eagle Landing Residence Hall courtyard. Email Ms. Eaton at jeaton4@nccu.edu to coordinate drop off times.

Ranch Chores is an essential part of what happens at Hope Reins. We work together to maintain a clean, beautiful, and safe area for the kids in our program. During Ranch Chores we typically participate in activities like the ones listed below: 

Invasive plant species removal in pastures - helps keep our pastures healthy and nutrition-rich for the horses

Fence staining - with miles of four board fence, it's an ongoing process!

Trail construction - our kids love to walk the trails with their mentors during sessions

Clearing fence lines - from downed limbs, brush and debris

Weeding and gardening - to ensure the Ranch is beautiful for our sessions kids

Blessed Greetings! Grow to LIFE is seeking volunteers to assist with coordination, promotion and presentation of our educational programs and events. Including setup, design and break down. Involves hands-on tasks like arranging and dismantling furniture or equipment for programs and events, cleaning up trash and materials afterward, lifting and moving items between locations, and maintaining storage areas to keep everything organized. If you have a dynamic smile, this opportunity is for you!  Please contact us at (919) 525-1599 for details.  Schedule will vary. Set up the market 11-2pm, unpack boxes, sort foods, restock shelves, pack delivery boxes and/or greet market members; Participate in market 2-5pm, support our mostly elderly/mature adult customers navigate market and carry items to their transportation, break down boxes, weigh each member's produce as they check out, and/or use your vehicle to deliver grocery boxes to households within 3 miles of the market (most are within 1 mile). 

About the Market:

The West End Free Market provides the West End, Lyon Park, and Lakewood communities with organic, local, high-quality produce and dry goods twice a month. Currently, there are over 350 members. This market is made possible through the strength of partnerships: West End Community Foundation, Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield, Duke Campus Farm, Farmer Foodshare, Root Causes, Happy Dirt, Ninth Steet Bakery, and Seal the Seasons. The West End Free Market values dignity, access, responsiveness, sustainability, collective care, and a sense of abundance for all. Here are some of the ways these values show up at market:

Member enrollment is free and requires no proof of need.   The market takes place at the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon Park which is fully ADA compliant.   Disabled and Elder market members can receive delivery. On-site shoppers can receive assistance in getting groceries to their transportation. ​ The market is open to elders (65+) only for the first 30 minutes.    Additionally, market materials are available in three languages: English, Spanish, and Arabic.

Join Welcome Baby and share gifts of warmth with Durham families. Welcome Baby is seeking a regular volunteer to assist with our Winter Coat Distribution. Volunteers will assist in pulling coats of appropriate size, gender and restocking as needed.

Every Friday from 9am-1pm (can be somewhat flexible on times) The opportunity will run through the end of February (depending on Punxsutawney Phil).

Black Girls for Liberation (BGfL) is an organization dedicated to nurturing Black girls through advocacy, education, and identity development. Through monthly programming, engaging curricula, and community service, we aim to cultivate a supportive community where Black girls can flourish.

Volunteers will:

Research Initiatives: Conduct research on Black girlhood and cultural identity development to inform our work and expand understanding in this field.

On behalf of the Office of Health Promotion and Education and the Counseling Center at North Carolina Central University, we are excited to announce the launch of the Harm Reduction Series in collaboration with the Durham County Department of Public Health.

This series is designed to ensure students are equipped with the knowledge and steps to take when it comes to preventing and responding to overdoses. The first session will be held on Wednesday, October 1st, at 5:30 PM in the AE Student Union Lobby. January 28, 2026, and  March 18, 2026 are 2 dates for the series. Be sure to attend.

Kidznotes has a new initiative to introduce students in grades 1-2 to music education at the Kidznotes Saturday Academy. Students have the option to enroll in one or more 10-week sessions in beginning violin, piano, and choir. Our volunteers have the option to be Musical Mentors, playing alongside our students and assisting the classroom teacher, or helping welcome families and assisting with administrative tasks.

Do you play an instrument and want to support beginning musicians in elementary, middle, and high school? Join us at Kidznotes as a Musical Mentor! We welcome college students with experience playing strings, winds, percussion, piano, or who sing in a choir to play alongside our student musicians. Having a Musical Mentor to play alongside students in class allows our students to build confidence and have support when they have questions. Musical Mentors can also work with our students one-on-one if they need extra help.

Volunteers are welcome for one-time and recurring volunteering.

***Because we work within Durham Public Schools, all volunteers and staff must be registered as a Durham Public Schools volunteer as well. Instructions will follow after sharing your interest here.

NCCU Athletics Game Day - Sports Information Department

Students will assist the Sports Information Department (SID) with camera operation, announcement, scoreboard operation and other media production activities for volleyball, football, basketball, track and field, softball, etc.

We offer several types of volunteer opportunities at our Thrift:

Cleaning the Stores + Tidying The Yard
Take our handy dandy cleaning cart and make the stores sparkle! This cart comes with a checklist that includes all the possible cleaning tasks for each store along with a duster, wet wipes, and several cleaning products. Great for folks who like a clean space and have attention to detail! This shift also includes picking up trash from the yard and lot, tidying the front bed and entrance area, and making sure we look good on the outside as well as the inside!

Clothes + Accessories Processing
This shift involves fixing clothes around the store, collecting hangers, tidying the floor, and processing clothes and accessories donations.

Frames + Housewares Processing
This shift involves processing our picture frames and housewares in our Thrift Store. Housewares includes kitchen items, decor, linens, and more.


We offer several types of volunteer opportunities at our Reuse Arts Center:

Bag + Box Processing

For detail-oriented folks who love sorting, organizing, and supporting some of the grittier aspects of our mission of reuse! This shift involves sorting through bags we have accumulated over the week, and separating them into different usable and unusable categories. Additionally, you will break down cardboard boxes for recycling.

For all of our crafty crafters! This involves packaging crafting material, testing supplies, sorting items, and tidying the sales floor.

For fabulous fabric fans! This includes cutting, measuring, and rolling fabric. From upholstery to quilting to apparel fabric, help us get it ready to put on the floor to sell.

Paper + Office Processing
This is a great opportunity for anyone with a real passion for ~school and office supplies~! Extra points if you have some skills and knowledge around paper and scrapbooking and of course like to tidy. This involves organizing binders, sorting paper and other items, and placing and pricing supplies.

Scrap + Barrel Item Processing (Afternoons only, no Wednesdays)
This shift involves sorting the barrel items and preloved materials we receive in bulk, such as pill bottles, medals, egg cartons, and more. This shift involves blue barrel section maintenance, packaging bulk items, and sorting items by color and size.

Tile, Wood, + Hardware Processing
This shift involves processing our hardware donations such as tools, paint, nails and screws, garden items, and more. It also involves culling and organizing our tile and wood section.

Toy + Game Processing
This shift involves testing toy donations, putting board games and puzzles together, repackaging items for the floor, and keeping the toy section tidy.

Yarn + Notions Processing
This involves bagging elastic, wrapping seam binding, pairing knitting needles, and packaging shoelaces.

One of the biggest obstacles to participation in activities outside of school for many youth is transportation. To address this for our participants, the StrongHER TogetHER Driver Pool assists youth with transportation needs to our program's activities and/or extracurricular learning activities that are funded through our program. We typically try to maintain a pool of about five drivers. When opportunities arise to assist the students, we send out a group text with the details to see who is available to help. Priority is given to drivers who have been licensed for 3+ years.

Drivers in the pool must complete a background check, a DMV check, and provide proof of a valid license and insurance information. This is a paid position with a time commitment of ~6-10 hours per month. (We are posting this as an urgent need because we typically have a driver pool of 5, however most of last year's pool has graduated. Thank you for considering if this opportunity is right for you.)

This internship provides professional development and community engagement opportunities for NCCU students. The learning objectives of this internship are the following:To promote and increase awareness of the Women’s Center and the resources and services it provides to the campus community. To aid in the fostering of community relationships between the Women’s Center and the campus community, local Durham community, and the global community. To provide education on social issues such as mental health advocacy, holistic support, women’s health, student success, and more to the community.
