Welcome to Purpose Learning Lab Literacy Program,

The reading buddies program allows older students the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition, they often come to see the value of reading. Students can not only promote good practices but gain self-esteem. Repeatedly reading easier books has been shown to improve reading abilities in poor readers, and this program provides students with a reason to read easier books.

Reading to younger students can help them develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Younger students should also read to their older buddies each week, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Because the program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. Ideally, buddy visits will be ongoing, and older and younger students will become familiar with one another and nurture a mutual interest in reading.

New Hope Elementary's Black Excellence Festival

Date: Thursday February 19th

Details: Join us as we celebrate all things Black Excellence at our 3rd Annual Festival! Volunteers will be supporting event set-up, activity stations, serving food to families, welcoming families into the building, and/or clean-up.

Join us for a hands-on, interactive training designed to equip students with essential lifesaving skills. This event will cover how to recognize emergency warning signs, respond to choking and overdose situations, perform CPR, use an AED, and take action during heart attack or stroke emergencies.Volunteers are needed to help support the event and ensure a smooth, engaging experience for all participants. This is a great opportunity for students to gain public health experience, support campus wellness efforts. This event will be held in the  Alfonso Elder Student Union.

Elementary School Field Day is a day of outdoor games, movement, and teamwork for K–5 students. Volunteers help run activity stations, encourage students, and keep things moving. It’s an easy way to support kids, be outside, and give back in a fun, positive setting.

We have monthly co-ops on the third Thursday of every month where we provide fresh produce, meat and dried goods to the public. This event is not only a celebration of our community's achievements but also an opportunity to inspire and empower the next generation. We would be honored to have you as a volunteer to help us recruit for our exciting summer camp.

1. Lead Live Science Experiments: Spark curiosity and wonder in young minds by conducting live science experiments. Inspire them to explore the world of science and its endless possibilities.

2. Set Up Tables: Help create an inviting and organized environment by assisting in setting up tables and displays to showcase our programs and offerings.

3. Build Rubber Band Power Cars: Engage with participants by guiding them in the hands-on creation of rubber band power cars, fostering creativity and innovation.

Do you have a passion for boxing, fitness, and youth mentorship? Purpose Learning Lab, Inc. is looking for a committed and energetic Boxing Club Volunteer to help lead our weekly Boxing Club sessions during Summer 2025!

This volunteer opportunity is perfect for individuals who enjoy teaching discipline, building confidence, and promoting healthy habits through physical activity and structured routines.

Assist with warm-ups, drills, and boxing techniques (non-contact)

Help with student supervision, safety, and motivation

Foster self-discipline, focus, and emotional regulation

CANDOR Farm supports the West End Free Market, by growing foods that reflect and respect local preferences, ensuring that fresh, culturally relevant produce is available at market. This also strengthens the market’s ability to sustain itself over time. This cycle of care and collaboration dismantles traditional hierarchies of food access, replacing them with a framework of shared abundance.

Please wear long pants and sleeves. Bring water, sun protection and anything else to make yourself comfortable. We'll come together to make friends, pull weeds and plant the seeds that will nourish our community for months to come.

We do not have onsite access to a bathroom. Foster's market closes at 3pm, there is a gas station across the street and CANDOR's building is at Part and Parcel about a mile drive away.

CANDOR Farm supports the West End Free Market, by growing foods that reflect and respect local preferences, ensuring that fresh, culturally relevant produce is available at market. This also strengthens the market’s ability to sustain itself over time. This cycle of care and collaboration dismantles traditional hierarchies of food access, replacing them with a framework of shared abundance.

Please wear long pants and sleeves. Bring water, sun protection and anything else to make yourself comfortable. We'll come together to make friends, pull weeds and our priority will be harvesting and processing goods for West End Free Market the next day.

We do not have onsite access to a bathroom. Foster's market closes at 3pm, there is a gas station across the street and CANDOR's building is at Part and Parcel about a mile drive away.

We have monthly co-ops on the third Thursday of every month where we provide fresh produce, meat and dried goods to the public. It is 100% free for anyone to come and pick up food. You will be helping with distribution. Distribution will consist of helping at the stations for people to take what they need. 

Passionate and committed volunteers are needed to help students K-12 reach their full academic potential and accomplish key educational milestones with customized learning plans tailored to their needs.

Welcome to Purpose Learning Lab Literacy Program,

The reading buddies program allows older students the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. In addition, they often come to see the value of reading. Students can not only promote good practices but gain self-esteem. Repeatedly reading easier books has been shown to improve reading abilities in poor readers, and this program provides students with a reason to read easier books.

Reading to younger students can help them develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Younger students should also read to their older buddies each week, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Because the program provides success in literacy, students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. Ideally, buddy visits will be ongoing, and older and younger students will become familiar with one another and nurture a mutual interest in reading.

Briggs Ave Community Garden is an agriculture education space owned by the North Carolina Agriculture Foundation at NCSU. We are an Extension program offering applied food and nutrition education with a seed to table approach. We teach families how to grow food for themselves and others using USDA Organic methods following food safety from the garden to the table. 30% of the food we grow is donated to Durham Technical Community College pantry.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has a number of internship opportunities available for students in both the Raleigh and Durham areas and covering:

Internships are for 3 - 4 months, based on the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters (Jan - May, May - August, late August - December).

The Durham Center for Senior Life (DCSL) is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping support our Thursday morning tech programming. Every Thursday from 9am-11am we run "Just Ask George" a one-on-one tech support program where DCSL members can drop in to get help with their phones, email, setting up accounts online, and more. 

For this role, we are looking for volunteers who would shadow George and help provide one-on-one tech support. Most of the questions members come with are on the basic technology side, such as how to attach photos to a text, how to download a document from an email, etc. We have over 10 desktop computers connected to ethernet that you can use with the members to demonstrate things or to look up information yourself, that would help you answer member questions, so you do not need to provide any materials. This is a great opportunity to help older adults become more tech savvy and independent while working with a fun and interesting group of people. 

After completing one assistant shift, interested volunteers are welcome to work with the programs team to desin and run run their own special tech presentations on topics such as Google storage, A.I. , Social Media, streaming services, etc..

The Community Empowerment Fund (CEF) is an organization that works to combat the racial wealth gap in Durham. With various programs, along with online financial coaching sessions and resources related to housing, CEF strives to equip Members of our community with the tools they may need to achieve financial independence.

As a volunteer advocate, you would be working with community Members to accomplish their goals in hour-long meetings, typically on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Meetings can range from discussing housing options locally and applying to jobs, to helping them find childcare for their kids. Advocates are expected to volunteer for 2 hours a week and attend community calls and trainings meant to advance their understanding of issues pertaining to racial equity and the specific needs of Members. Additionally, volunteers can engage in advocacy-related projects to support Members.

Join Welcome Baby and share gifts of warmth with Durham families. Welcome Baby is seeking a regular volunteer to assist with our Winter Coat Distribution. Volunteers will assist in pulling coats of appropriate size, gender and restocking as needed.

Every Friday from 9am-1pm (can be somewhat flexible on times) The opportunity will run through the end of February (depending on Punxsutawney Phil).

If you are available most Friday’s please consider joining the Welcome Baby team, your time will help keep Giving Closet process run smoothly and efficiently and impact Durham families this winter.

About the Event: Exploration Day is a high-energy experience where students explore different clubs and interests. Volunteers will help lead clubs, facilitate activities, and engage with students throughout the day. All materials and instructions will be provided—just bring your energy and enthusiasm!

Join us in the Community Garden Sacred Soil just minutes from campus! Come get your hands in the soil, meet new friends, and help grow fresh produce that supports sustainability and community wellness.

We will be hosting a Career Fair for our kindergarten through 5th graders and their families.  We will need help with setting up, showing our students and their families where things are, then breaking down and cleaning up.

We need volunteers to help serve food, help guide guests to their seats, help set up, help breakdown and clean up at the end, and other duties/tasks as assigned.

SDS needs people to organize clothes for our event The Fit Exchange. This will be a clothing swap for all of campus. Volunteers will perform check in, organize, sort and fold the clothes that are brought in.

This program offers the opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge and experiences learned through their non-paid experiential learning experiences.

Our Expectations

Youth SEL Mentors are asked to lead mentoring sessions once a week, for a duration of one year (or two semesters, Fall and Spring, as outlined in the Durham Public School calendar). A minimum commitment of at least one semester is required. Due to the emotional and academic effects of COVID paired with school closures, Purpose Learning Lab, Inc is currently conducting virtual tutoring for K-8th grade participants. Times below:

Black Girls for Liberation (BGfL) is an organization dedicated to nurturing Black girls through advocacy, education, and identity development. Through monthly programming, engaging curricula, and community service, we aim to cultivate a supportive community where Black girls can flourish.

Volunteer Opportunities: We are seeking passionate college students to join us in this transformative work.

Volunteers will:

Research Initiatives: Conduct research on Black girlhood and cultural identity development to inform our work and expand understanding in this field.

Social Media Support: Assist with creating, editing, and posting content that highlights our programs, events, and impact.

Video Production: Support in filming, editing, and uploading short videos to share the stories and voices of Black girls and our community.

Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per month, with opportunities to grow based on interest and availability. We welcome college sophomores, juniors, and seniors from any discipline with a passion for supporting Black girls and a commitment to equity and advocacy.

On behalf of the Office of Health Promotion and Education and the Counseling Center at North Carolina Central University, we are excited to announce the launch of the Harm Reduction Series in collaboration with the Durham County Department of Public Health.

This series is designed to ensure students are equipped with the knowledge and steps to take when it comes to preventing and responding to overdoses. The first session will be held on Wednesday, October 1st, at 5:30 PM in the AE Student Union Lobby. January 28, 2026, and  March 18, 2026 are 2 dates for the series. Be sure to attend.
