Volunteer: Mental Health Advocacy and Well-being-MHFA

The NCCU Counseling Center provides opportunities throughout the year to encourage our campus community to become advocates of mental health well-being. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is one of the ways students, faculty, and staff members can learn approaches to help others.

MHFA training provides effective ways to respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or emergency and connect them to appropriate resources. Attendees learn to recognize the signs of disruption that may occur for a specific problem or as an ongoing concern. Students can earn service hours by completing this training. The 2-hour self-paced module and pre-work must be completed before attending the remaining part of the training that is in-person (ILT).

Registration is open to current NCCU administrators, faulty, staff, and students, and community members. Registration is at a tiered cost. The following link is for registering for the course separate from adding the service opportunity once the training is completed, https://forms.gle/pti1YAQMdEk4V4Eb8.

The following link is for registering for the course separate from adding the service opportunity once the training is completed, https://forms.gle/SnBP7wwMgCuK3AM46.

Volunteer: URGENT: StrongHER TogetHER Driver

One of the biggest obstacles to participation in activities outside of school for many youth is transportation. To address this for our participants, the StrongHER TogetHER Driver Pool assists youth with transportation needs to our program's activities and/or extracurricular learning activities that are funded through our program. We typically try to maintain a pool of about five drivers. When opportunities arise to assist the students, we send out a group text with the details to see who is available to help. Priority is given to drivers who have been licensed for 3+ years.

Drivers in the pool must complete a background check, a DMV check, and provide proof of a valid license and insurance information. This is a paid position with a time commitment of ~6-10 hours per month. (We are posting this as an urgent need because we typically have a driver pool of 5, however most of last year's pool has graduated. Thank you for considering if this opportunity is right for you.)

Strategies to achieving our goals include providing mentoring, specialized tutoring, reading challenges, assistance in boosting End-Of-Grade testing scores, school supplies, daily snacks, enrichment activities and field trips.

Volunteer: Help Needed for Museum of Durham History at Farmer's Markets

The Museum of Durham History is making moves this summer: we would like to attend 2 different farmer's market, each once a month, with a marketing table and some traveling exhibit materials. For this to happen, we would need lots of volunteer help to set up, staff, and break down.

These would be both the Durham Farmer's Market at Durham Central Park and the Black Farmer's Market at Durham Tech. The first date would be April 26th at Durham Central Park, with 2 volunteer shifts: 8:30am-10:30am, and 10:30am-12:30pm. The second date would be May 4th at Durham Technical Community College, with 2 volunteer shifts: 11:30am-2:30pm and 2:30pm-4:30pm.

The setup would include a tent, a table and chairs. We would have marketing materials available for people to grab, as well as sign-up sheets for our newsletter. Most importantly, these farmer's markets will be a way for us to show off our Faces of Durham traveling exhibit. It is our goal this summer to expand into public spaces and community gatherings by bringing our historical content directly to folks outside the museum.

If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to MANAGER@MODH.ORG OR PROGRAMMING@MODH.ORG
