If you are looking for a leadership opportunity that isn't a huge lift for the Fall, then this might be a fit for you. LAUNCH! is a part of our program where we support 11th and 12th grade students with the college application process. The initiative is fairly new for us, so we're still small. This Fall, we are supporting 9 Durham seniors, many of whom are first generation. Last spring, we took them on three campus tours and hosted sessions for them about the common app, essays, testing, references, scholarships and FAFSA. This semester, they are all assigned a college mentor to work with them 1-1 as they go through the college application process.
We are looking for a couple of folks to add to the LAUNCH! leadership team. There is a lunch planned for 8/29 and if you could come to that, great! It's a session where the mentors and mentees will be introduced to each other. But beyond that, we are having monthly zooms with breakouts to be sure that the pairings are staying connected. In the past, this has been hit or miss. Either because the mentees or their mentors is not great with the communications. We need someone on our team to help to be sure that the pairings are working and in situations where there's a gap, can step in and make sure the student is supported through the application process. Outside of that, we have a couple of essay development sessions. We have a facilitator for those, but need someone from the leadership team to attend and help the students with their essays. These sessions would be happening before most early decision deadlines in mid to late October. Finally, this leadership team usually has a zoom call every two - four weeks, depending on what's happening.
