Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the Museum of Durham History as we provide programs and experiences to Durham residents and visitors. Our commitment to volunteers is to provide meaningful volunteer experience and effective direction in an environment that is friendly, comfortable, educational, and fun.
We are specifically looking for long-term volunteers who are able to help on-site twice per month on average. Available shifts include Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am - 1 pm, 1-3 pm, 3-5 pm; Sunday, 12-3 pm, 3-5 pm.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assists with general museum reception and visitor services, meets and greets the general public at the reception desk
- Provides general information about the museum, exhibits and the community
- Answers the telephone
- Assist in opening and closing procedures, depending on shift schedule
- Relays accurate information about planned programs/events to visitors
- Ensures all exhibit areas are tidy and functioning
- Assists visitors with recording their personal memories in the Story Room
- Collects visitor feedback and communicates to staff
- Assists the Weekend Manager with any special projects
- May also assist in special projects based on skill-set and evaluation
Skills to be Enhanced or Developed on the Job:
- Will learn about the history of Durham
- Learn to work within a team environment
- Will learn about aspects of visitor/hospitality services through training and on-the-job experience
- An understanding of the inner workings of a non-profit museum.
Qualifications and Skills Preferred:
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must attend a brief Zoom introduction with Operations Manager, as well as a tour of the Museum and review of policies+procedures
- Must enjoy working with the public, meeting new people, partnering with staff and volunteers
- Must possess good communication skills
- General knowledge and interest in the Durham community
